There’s sometimaes a slight confusion in wording, is it backilinks or back links? I’ll stick to using backlink as it appears to be more commonly used online in refering to links pointing back to your site from other sites.
It’ salso called “off page SEO”
WHAT?
The point of building backlinks is to give more reasons for Google to place the site higher in search results. This result sin better visibility and increased traffic.
The side effect is also better Page Rank which is a value assigned by Google to your site’s individual pages based on the amount and quality of incoming links.
WHY?
Building backlinks translates to free traffic (well it’s free assuming you did not pay for the links) but it takes some knoweledge to do it right.
It works in reverse as well – bad links can work against you and lower you rank.
HOW?
The best quality links:
- come from sites with high reputation ie. .gov or .edu sites
- come from sites with highest Page Rank
- are one-way (your site does not point bck to the site where you get the backlink from)
- are built in “natural” to avoid search engines penalty
- are built consistently
The fastest and free ways of building backlins include:
- submission to online directories,
- creating articles at article directories
- getting backlinks from social bookmarking sites
- getting links from posting on relevant forums
- building mini-sites with links on free site building services
- submitting RSS feeds
